Integrating Tapal Kuda’s Local Wisdom Values to Strengthen Islamic Education in Jember: A Contextual Analysis Across Formal and Non-Formal Institutions

Abstract

This study analyzes the integration of Tapal Kuda local wisdom in strengthening Islamic education in Jember through a contextual approach across formal and non-formal institutions. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected from 12 informants through observations, in-depth interviews, and curriculum document analysis. The novelty of this study lies in its systematic examination of how Tapal Kuda cultural religious values are simultaneously applied in both school settings and pesantren environments, a perspective rarely explored in previous research. The findings show that core values such as ajeg (steadfastness), tepo seliro (mutual respect), dhegemar (obedience to teachers), along with traditions like slametan and tahlilan, are effectively integrated into Islamic educational practices. Formal institutions incorporate these values through local content, co-curricular activities, and character-building routines, while non-formal institutions apply them through moral education, pesantren traditions, and culturally grounded social interactions. The study recommends developing a more systematic integration model, strengthening institutional collaboration, and enhancing teacher capacity in culture-based education. Overall, integrating local wisdom significantly reinforces students’ religious, social, and cultural character and supports the harmonization of Islamic education with the local context
