AN EXPLORATORY STUDY OF THE STUDENTS' SILENCE IN LEARNING ENGLISH: PESANTREN STUDENTS PARADIGM

Abstract

The present study investigates students' silent conduct in EFL classes. It looks into the causes of students' silent or nonverbal engagement in class and then offers a number of recommendations for improving in-class discourse. 85 English majors at Al-Falah As-Sunniyah University in Indonesia make up the study's population, and semi-structured interviews and a questionnaire are used to gather data. According to the findings, there are a number of reasons why students remain silent in class, including impersonal and personal aspects, linguistic and psychological elements including the students' personalities and language skills, the teaching style, the course topic, and class collaboration. In addition to the theoretical debate, the empirical data presented in this study may help teachers and practitioners of applied linguistics become more cognizant of and comprehend students' silent conduct on a deeper level. The current study intentionally aims to improve this English language teaching and learning effectiveness in University in Pesantren.
